EIT Hawke’s Bay offers a wide range of viticulture and wine science as well as wine business programmes which are ideal for people working in the wine industry as well as those who are aiming for a career in this exciting business.
Particularly relevant for people who work in the industry are the new Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and the Graduate Diploma in Oenology (by distance). From 2011, the Graduate Diploma in Oenolgy will also be offered as an on-campus programme, These programmes ,which are for degree graduates, are ideal for people working in regional winegrowing industries who wish to increase and deepen their skills and knowledge in order to further their careers. The programme emphasises the specific scientific, technical and managerial aspects of grapegrowing and winemaking. It is the only online programme of its type in New Zealand. The online learning is supplemented with a compulsory residential school in Hawke’s Bay.
Also offered are the popular undergraduate degrees in Viticulture and Wine Science, a practically-oriented Certificate in Grapegrowing and Winemaking, a Diploma in Wine Marketing, and a part-time distance Certificate in Wine.
The degrees, which include the opportunity to study for both the Bachelor of Viticulture and Bachelor of Wine Science concurrently over four years, are considered “flagship” programmes for the institute, and have an equivalency relationship with Charles Sturt University in Australia. These degrees are available both online and on-campus, full-time and part-time.
EIT’s Centre of Viticulture and Wine incorporates state of the art facilities, including an on-site winery, specialised laboratory/teaching facilities, teaching vineyard, sensory laboratory, and a research laboratory. The Mercedes-Benz A&P Wine Awards are judged in the sensory laboratory on the main campus in Taradale.

Each year EIT’s top winemaking student joins the Craggy crew for vintage. It is an opportunity to work with a talented team in a state of the art winery. It’s our way of giving something back to the industry by providing a budding winemaker with the chance to gain experience by working alongside winemakers from around the world.
Vintage at Craggy Range isn’t easy. Our winery team work 70-90 hours a week, keeping the cellar running through cold nights and busy fruit filled days. The experience is hands on and gives the students a real insight into winery life. Our relationship with the top student doesn’t end when vintage finishes. Several former recipients of the award are now employed in our winery full time, helping to make wines that we are extremely proud of. We hope our support of EIT and the Hawke’s Bay A&P Society continues for a very long time.
The Hawke’s Bay A&P Society was incorporated in 1878 and is one of the oldest in existence today. Synonymous with promoting all things agricultural, this Society, along with 110 affiliated Societies throughout the country, became the movement which has facilitated one of the most popular forms of community get togethers in New Zealand’s history - the A&P Show.
Today this Society reaches far beyond the Show and markets and leases its Showground’s as an event centre to many organisations. Set on 42 hectares (100acres) the facility is second to none with beautiful, spacious, park like grounds, which include the Waikoko Gardens, venue for the Hawke’s Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine Awards.
